2013 - Pollok by Hazel Bracken

Wow what a year, where to start? Well 2013 has been a year of change at the Pollok club, with myself (Hazel Bracken) now instructor at the club, having taken over from Scott McMillan.  I am so grateful for this opportunity, he has passed on a club with fantastic students full of huge potential and I am very excited for the future… bring on 2014!

Annual Awards night 2013
2013 saw us start the year with the Annual Awards night, where we celebrated the successes of 2012 and set new goals for 2013.  I’m looking forward to this year’s awards night on 22nd February 2014 because 2013 has been a cracking year for the club and we have a lot to look back on and celebrate!

Colour belt gradings
2013 has seen Pollok students performing consistently well at the colour belt gradings.  This is a reflection of the hard work and effort put in by all the students in preparation for the gradings.  Keep this up and I’m sure it won’t be long before Pollok gets its first black belts!

Fundraising
This year has also seen us do a lot more fundraising for the Pollok club and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped with this.  Whether it’s been the sponsored run in Pollok Park, ‘Guessing the number of sweets in the jar’ or bag packing in B&M, everything has made a difference and is going to help support the club’s students.

it their all and enjoyed themselves despite it being absolutely freezing!

Competitions
And of course this blog would not be complete without mentioning the club’s success at competitions.  This year we’ve had students competing at the Scottish, English, Welsh, British and World championships.  Congratulations to all those who have competed and medalled, and we can now boast current Scottish (Chiara McIntyre and Louise MacDonald) and British (Craig Dalziel) champions amongst us.  All of the club’s competitors have gone into each competition and given it their all, and although they’ve not necessarily won every time, they are continually learning and improving for the next competition.  I truly believe that if they keep working hard and striving for improvement then all these students have the potential to be future World champions!

2013 - Prestwick & Ayr by Kulwant Chahal

Well that’s the last class of the year done and now everyone can take a well deserved break after a very busy year...first of all don’t get too used to me hijacking the blog it’s a rare thing so make the most of it. As I just said it’s been a very busy year for all of us with competitions galore, gradings , personal goals whether it was learning a pattern, set sparring, getting to the next belt,  doing your first competition , starting to spar, or simply just taking part in that 1st training class a big well done from me. It’s been good to see some of the parents who have gone from sitting at the back of the hall watching their son/daughter training to actually deciding to take part in the class after some gentle persuading from the senior grades and have gone onto getting to 7th,6th kup  at the last grading a great achievement.
Final Class of 2013 in Prestwick

Some of you gave competing a go for the first time and now have the bug for sparring and patterns going onto Sunday training and already looking at next year’s calendar of events - brilliant.  I must at this point thank Mr. Scott Mc Millan for his Sunday sparring classes I have no doubt what so ever that these extra training classes have played a part in helping the students achieve success in competitions – cheers Scott (get your own blog lol )

There have been some good performances on the competition circuit with the usual suspects Connor Mulgrew, Mikey McDowall, & Karina Chahal having competed on a regular basis throughout the year getting their fair share of silver ware. Mikey has done well this year and his sparring is coming on leaps n bounds he should have an interesting year in 2014. Karina has been a bit of a surprise package this year – she’s gone from wanting to do competitions to wanting to win every competition she’s in and you can’t ask for anymore than that. She put aside the disappointment of the world championships of only getting a silver in the tag team (her words not mine) to going on to up her training to sometimes 6 times a week and then doing well in 2 Scottish competitions and rounding off with the a bronze and silver at the British championships with the best sparring performance to date. Connor Mulgrew has had a busy year also doing every competition this year and then went up a division in September to boys light weight at the Scottish open. At the age of 12 he’s one of the youngest and smallest in that category but that didn’t faze him and used the disappointment of being on the wrong side of a few sidekicks to working on his timing and movement to beat a very much taller and heavier opponent in the final at the British championships and become the boys blue belt British champion. Young Teagan Harley overcame her fear of sparring to competing in patterns and sparring this year and getting a gold and bronze along the way well done.

And now for the new kids on the block – young Dylan Nutt – amazing uses his cute factor to its full potential on and off the mat did very good this year, Ryan Brown, Thomas Murphy competed for the first time to see what all the fuss is about, Ieuan Harley got in on the action also this year and did well, Craig Nutt & Gill Blackwood did really good for their first year competing both came away with silverware this year well done. Young Katie Walker made a comeback at the Scottish closed let’s hope she’s here to stay.

On the home front the Ayr club is starting to grow nicely with a real family feel about it with parents training alongside their kids it’s good to see from my own experience of having my kids being a part of my hobby. At Prestwick it’s been business as usual with the kids training hard and having fun and the adults having fun training hard. Quite a few of the kids in the middle class are getting to grips with their new blue belt patterns whilst still remembering to practice all the patterns from the earlier belts good work – keep it going. Also we had new edition to the team black belts Erin Sawyer, passing her black belt in October. I’m looking forward to next year as everyone comes back to training in January with their own goals in mind so get thinking – write it down and put in your training bag where you will be reminded every time you get ready for training.

Finally I would like to say a BIG BIG thank you to all the people who have helped me with the club this year – Mark Sawyer, Karen Harley, Kiran Chahal, Michael McRobert ,Steven Kerr, Karina Chahal to name but a few. Iain Harley for the our club photos and blogs Bryan Mulgrew for the editorials in the local paper and then there’s all you guys who finally persuaded me to get a club suit and helped with the design and input into the logo – thanks – looking good in your new Doboks maybe we could even model them at the awards night in February.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Cheers

It’s getting to that time of the year where I like to reflect on the achievements and events of the year gone by.  And what a year!!!

January:
It was quite a slow start but was only ever going to develop momentum. The Westend club got back very quickly, but the Kilmarnock club was a bit slower.

The first accolade of the year Was for me to be awarded the SportScotland Development Coach of 2012.

July
The  10th Open World Taekwondo Championships in Coventry, England. This would be the place where new milestones in Phoenix Taekwondo’s history would be written.

This competition turned out to be the biggest Taekwondo competition ever in Europe, with 3000 competitors over 3 days, being supported by 31 countries, from as far as New Zealand.

The Kilmarnock competitors were in action on the first day, with the Black belt point stop categories. Point Stop is where the competitor need to be first to score the point with either kicks or punches to the scoring area. This type of competition is very dynamic and requires the competitors to be very quick.

First up was Hazel Bracken who was 1 of 20 competitors in the Black belt Ladies heavyweight category. Not normally Hazels preferred event, but winning all the fights to the final saw her matched up with World Champion Nicky Line from England.  The final was a close affair, unfortunately she was narrowly beaten by her English opponent, and silver was the colour of her fist medal of the weekend.

Next for Hazel was point stop team event. This was where Hazel and her Scottish team mates, Joanne Duncan and Gillian Duncan managed to get revenge over the English World Champions, which included Nicky Line, for Scotland to win the event in the England v Scotland final.

Next up was James Reed…who was in the Men’s Black belt Middleweight category, which had 67 competitors, this was not going to be a short day.  In the earlier rounds James competed with total dominance, he was generally too good for the competition fighting 7 rounds to the final. So the final was Scotland v Argentina, scoring all his points with ease he ended up beating his Argentine opponent 10-1 in the final. And so James took the first of his World titles….this was a bonus, as the one he wanted was on the Sunday. This brought closure to the Scottish participation for the first day.

Time for day two, this day was for the all colour belts and junior black belts. First up in the green belt Patterns was Kiara Wright, in her first big competition and full of nerves, she performed her pattern superbly, unfortunately this was not to be her day. Next was Breagh MacKellar, current Welsh and English champion, competing in her first World Championship and was hoping to do well. Competing in high humidity and the occasion getting the better of her, it was not going to be her day.  This was a similar story for Breagh’s class mate Nicole Shearer, who has excelled in national competitions, but found herself a little unlucky in the Individual blue belt category. Nicole put up a good fight, but unfortunately was not enough on the day.
Time for the colour belt boys, Declan Caddis Green Belt lightweight, who in his first world championships didn’t fair to well in the individual event, but in his team event managed to pick up a bronze. In the Boys blue belt middleweight, there a slightly different story for Scot Wright, who managed to take his domestic form and do well through the rounds. His determination was rewarded in with a bronze in his first International competition.

In the Mens blue belt Paul Monahan, was very unlucky to lose to Welsh lad in his first round, a match he dominated in parts.

Next was Natalie McMillan, who domestically has been doing well and is a European medallist. Her first two rounds Natalie was too strong for the competition beating a Pole and her team mate Demi Allan, to get a quarter-final matching with an exceptionally talented German girl. Natalie started the quarter-final well very even until half way through the match and letting her guard down the German opponent managed to get two head kicks, which effectively ended Natalies participation in the Individual competition.  However in the team event Natalie with her team mates Demi Allan and Lindsay McGowan, were narrowly beaten by a good USA team for the final and earned a very credible 3rd place, which brought a close to the 2nd day of competition for the Kilmarnock participants.

So the main day, for the Black belt continuous events and the International team competitions.
The day started with Hazel Bracken being called up for her continuous bout, Hazel again proving to strong, march through the rounds beating opponents from Poland, USA and Wales to meet Nicky Line again in the final. Hazel fighting composed was ahead after round one, but narrowly lost the match over the two rounds, again picking up the silver.

Next was Michael McRoberts, fighting in the Mens middleweight. Michael, fighting well, managed to get through the rounds but was beaten in the quarter finals.
After Michael was James Reed in the Men’s Middleweight category which, loaded with very talented fighters, was always going to be a tough competition. James eased through his early rounds, getting a tricky Argentine in the semis, which he narrowly won. This set up a meeting the World Champion from 2010 Tyrell Belony from England. This match was a tense affair as both have fought each other many times. Round one was all even as was round two, the match went into an extended 1 minute. Coming out for all he was worth James applied the pressure for the whole of the extra time. It came time for the judge to call the winner and 3 judges to 1 scored in favour of James…meaning he was double World Champion.

After tough individual events, it was time for teams James was in the Mens team, beating Russia and USA to a semi-final with Wales…which was narrowly lost, so the boys had to settle for silver this time.
Hazel with her team mate managed to go one better, claiming silver in the teams, beating Poland and Russia to meet England in the final. Again another close affair….but England took the advantage to win.
These were World Championships were the most successful ever for any Scottish contingent and most certainly for any Ayrshire club. Kilmarnock can boast a Double World Taekwondo Champion, in the form of James Reed.

Wow! What a year….all the clubs doing very well, learning and growing. Whats more important is the personal development. Taekwondo, when taught properly, is not only an effective martial art. Taekwondo is a very effective too to develop life skills, along with the support of parents and guardians.

It is fair to say I am very pleased with 2013, and after a “wee” break looking forward to what 2014 has in store for Phoenix Taekwondo.

I hope all reading this has a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR

See you all in 2014
Scott
